A Recap of Recent Regulatory Changes on 31 Aug 2010 4:43 PM
Two key dates and two major changes later, you may be scratching your head wondering what all the excitement was about. Below is a recap of Augusts’ changes as they relate to ATM/debit transactions and credit cards, and what they mean to you.

Reg E—Overdraft Options (August 15, 2010)

In the past, once your account had been open for 60 days and in good standing, all transactions were covered under the Overdraft Privilege Program up to $700 unless you opted out of the program altogether. Now, ACH and check transactions are still covered after the 60 days. ATM and debit transactions, however, require a proactive opt-in from you; otherwise the transactions are declined if the transaction would cause your account to be negative.

If you haven’t opted in and would like to, you can find the form here [link].

CARD Act—New Credit Card Rules (August 22, 2010)

1.      Reasonable Penalty Fee
Your credit card company cannot charge you a fee of more than $25 unless:
·         One of your last six payments was late, in which case your fee may be up to $35; or
·         Your credit card company can show that the costs it incurs as a result of late payments justify a higher fee.

In addition, your credit card company cannot charge a late payment fee that is greater than your minimum payment.  So, if your minimum payment is $20, your late payment fee can't be more than $20.  Similarly, if you exceed your credit limit by $5, you can't be charged an over-the-limit fee of more than $5.

2.      Other Fee Protections
·         No inactivity fees.  Your credit card company can't charge you inactivity fees, such as fees for not using your card.
·         One-fee limit.  Your credit card company can't charge you more than one fee for a single event or transaction that violates your cardholder agreement. For example, you cannot be charged more than one fee for a single late payment.

3.      Explanation of Rate Increases
If your credit card company increases your card's Annual Percentage Rate (APR), it must tell you why.

4.      Re-evaluation of Recent Rate Increases
If your credit card company increases your APR, it must re-evaluate that rate increase every six months.  If appropriate, it must reduce your rate within 45 days after completing the evaluation.

If you have an Alliance credit card you’ve never been subjected to exorbitant fees or arbitrary rate changes. If you’re interested in moving your other credit card balances to Alliance, call us at 800.232.8669.

Check your state’s unclaimed property database for money owed to you on 06 Jan 2010 4:35 PM

You may have money owed to you that you didn’t know about.  Check your state’s controller/treasury office to see if you have any unclaimed property owed to you.  It takes just a few seconds and you may be surprised by what you find.
Unclaimed property consists of:

…bank accounts, wages, utility deposits, insurance policy proceeds, stocks, bonds, and contents of safe deposit boxes that typically have been abandoned for one to five years. Funds become unclaimed because the company loses track of the consumer, due to an incorrect address or other missing information. By law, these funds are…turned over to the Department of State Treasurer for safekeeping." [1]

For California residents, please visit http://scoweb.sco.ca.gov/UCP and enter your information into the search criteria.

For North Carolina residents, please visit http://www.nctreasurer.com. Go to the Unclaimed Property tab then click “Search for NC Cash.”  Here is where you input your name to search for unclaimed property that belongs to you.

Don't be fooled by "free credit report" ads on 03 Dec 2009 7:02 PM
A recent article in the New York Times indicates that the Federal Trade Commission has taken issue with those ubiquitous free credit report ads. The issue is that credit reports at certain Web sites aren’t free unless you pay for a monthly credit monitoring service. Because many consumers have some idea that they have a right to a free credit report, but not where to get it, they assume that these free credit report Web sites are the place.

Alliance reminds you that you do have the right to free credit reports through the Annual Credit Report Request Service at www.annualcreditreport.com. For most consumers, periodically checking your credit report for inaccuracy or identity theft is sufficient; you don’t need to pay for credit monitoring.

If you would like to schedule an appointment with a Member Relationship Manager to discuss your credit report and how to improve and protect your credit standing, please call us at 800.232.8669. One of our representatives would love to sit down with you and answer any questions you may have. As always, this service is complimentary.
